Turning on an old TV without a remote: Vityaz, Favorit, DEXP, Toshiba, Samsung, and others

Where to look for hidden buttons, how to power on a standby TV, and how to switch inputs when the original remote is gone.

Quick answer

Start with the least destructive check, confirm the device state, and only then change settings. For this problem, the fastest route is usually: Check the front, side, and lower frame for Power or joystick controls. Start with a short Power press, then try Channel Up or Input. Use the source menu before changing channel tuning.

Before you start

  • Check the front, side, and lower frame for Power or joystick controls.
  • Start with a short Power press, then try Channel Up or Input.
  • Use the source menu before changing channel tuning.
  • Buy or program a universal remote if the panel buttons are broken.

Find the physical control panel

Most older televisions have a small set of buttons on the front edge, side edge, or bottom lip of the case. Look for Power, Menu, Channel, Volume, Input, or a joystick-style button that can be pressed and nudged in four directions.

On Vityaz, Favorit, DEXP, Toshiba, Samsung, and many similar sets, the button may be hidden under the screen frame. Use a light and check both side edges before assuming the TV has no manual controls.

Turn the TV on without changing settings

Press and hold Power for two or three seconds. If there is no dedicated Power key, press the joystick once. If the standby light changes color but the screen stays black, press Channel Up or Input once after the power attempt.

Avoid holding Menu or Volume keys for a long time on unknown models. Some older service menus are opened with long presses and can make the picture harder to restore.

Switch to the right input

If a console, TV box, DVD player, or antenna is connected, the TV may be on the wrong source. Open the source list with Input, AV, TV/AV, Source, or Menu, then use Channel or Volume keys to move through the list.

When the TV uses a single joystick, push left or right to move through sources and press the center to confirm. Wait a few seconds after each input because old sets often need time to detect a signal.

Use a replacement remote when buttons are missing

A universal remote is the cleanest fix for sets with broken buttons. Search by brand and chassis when possible, then try the auto-search mode if the code table does not include your exact model.

Phones with an infrared port can also control many old televisions. Install a trusted remote app, choose the closest brand, and test Power, Volume, Channel, and Input before saving the profile.

FAQ

Can every old TV be turned on without a remote?
Most can, but not all. If the physical button board is damaged or disconnected, you will need a replacement remote or a repair of the control board.
Why does the standby light turn on but the screen stays black?
The TV may be on the wrong input, muted by a failed backlight, or waiting for a signal. Check Input first, then test the connected device and cable.
